Employee Spotlight – Linda Stein

February 2, 2021

In this Employee Spotlight, we would like to introduce you all to Linda, Head of Legal and Compliance, at Crosscard. Linda joined our team back in February 2020, and we are pleased to have found a competent legal professional with more than 10 years of experience in diverse areas of law. She has a strong background in corporate law and governance, regulatory compliance and fintech projects.

Q: When did you begin your legal career?

A: I started my legal career in November 2008. After having tried a couple of roles in an international law firm, as well as public institutions, it was very soon clear to me that becoming an in-house lawyer will be the exact right role for me. Thus, I focused on building my career working for the legal department of a company active in the commodities trading business. My experience lies in implementation and monitoring the best in class practice with respect to corporate governance for companies, internal restructuring, team management and corporate transactions (M&A). The main responsibilities of an in-house lawyer are always managing corporate law, corporate governance, human resources and internal audit.

Q: What tasks do you carry out in your job, and what are some of the tools that you use?

A: Within my current position as Head of Legal and Compliance I am not only dealing with governance-related matters but also responsible for managing the regulatory risks and controls of the business to ensure they comply with applicable laws and regulations. There are no fancy special tools needed for the performance of the duties of an in-house lawyer. It is necessary to be able to use your knowledge and soft skills to ensure balancing the interests of the shareholders and the Company with the regulatory requirements.

In July 2020 I was appointed Authorized Manager of Crosscard S.A., which means that I am in charge of the daily management of the Company for the following business units:  legal, compliance, human resources, operations, internal audit.

Q: What’s your favourite part of the job?

A: The finding of the equilibrium between the regulatory requirements imposed on our business and the best interests of our operations.

Q: Three things that many people don’t know about me.

A: 1. Being born in a multinational family, having enjoyed moving along countries during my life, having experienced work with various different nationalities and multinational teams, I am proud about my knowledge of 4 languages, 3 of which are the official languages of the European Union (German, English, French). Most of the people are surprised to know that I am also fluent in Russian. I grew up in a bilingual household and my knowledge of Russian also extends to the professional level, as I have worked for a Swedish law firm in Saint Petersburg (Russia) and I am able to draft contracts and perform legal work in this language.

  1. As the legal profession is mostly associated with serious, dry and boring matters, most of the people are surprised that I am a passionate comic fan, having a slight preference for Marvel over DC.
  2. While being a strict lawyer at work, I enjoy being a wife and mom at home and cooking for my family. I am always trying to be an inventive cook in the home kitchen and spoil my family with new dishes.

Q: On a personal note, what are some of your hobbies and interests?

A: I have always been into sports and a passionate fitness fan. But to be honest, after the birth of my youngest son I have been kind of negligent of this topic. So I took Crosscard’s slogan for 2020 that it shall be the year of transformation, very seriously and started with workouts during the lockdown in 2020, which resulted in the winning of a couple of fitness challenges.

I am a typical bookworm and am very enthusiastic about reading. I read all possible genres, but my slight preference is for fantasy. End of 2020 I felt that I was finally ready to pursue the aspiration to read Stephen King’s “The Dark Tower” (a series of eight books) and I am now in the middle of the 4th book.
